Your ringtone says a lot about you; sometimes it says too much. It’s okay to have personalized ringtones on your personal used cell phone, but the latest Hip Hop single has no place on your professional phone. While most standard ringtones are boring, they are much more professional than those that you can download. Set your work phone to a generic, pre-installed ringtone to avoid embarrassing situations in the workplace. Nothing says immature and unprofessional quite like an abrupt rendition of the latest Snoop Dog tune from your pocket during a meeting.

Ring-back tones are the musical numbers that you can select for people to hear when they call you. Instead of hearing the ringing of the phone, they are entertained with any musical number or comedic routine that you select for them. Ring-backs are fun for your friends, but they are a huge turn off in the professional world. Get rid of them.

Keep your used cell phone clean. This step involves more than just wiping down your cell phone every now and then. Remove anything that personalizes your cell phone including stickers and flashy cell-phone covers. It is likely that your boss, coworkers and clients will see your phone. Keep it looking professional.

Keep it Quiet

Cell phones are vital tools for modern communication, but they are not an excuse for bad manners. Place your refurbished cell phone into silent mode whenever you are speaking with clients, in a meeting or doing something important with others. If you forget to turn down the volume, turn off the ringer and apologize. Don’t answer the phone or walk away from what you are doing to attend to other business.
