Effective Ways to Use Shampoo
We’ve all been shampooing our hair for years, ever since the day we gave up the baby shampoo and started bathing ourselves. But are we really using shampoo effectively? Here are some of the most effective ways to make sure your hair stays clean, soft and healthy.
- First, don’t forget that your hair is attached to your scalp, which is skin. As such, it will dry out if it gets too much soap or if the soap doesn’t get washed out. Thinking of your scalp as skin will help, because it behaves the way most skin does – it produces oil, it needs moisturizer, etc.
- Don’t ever use too much. Most shampoo will go much further than we expect. A dime-sized drop will spread out nicely, especially if your hair isn’t especially long or thick. Salon-quality shampoos are much more concentrated than the drugstore variety, so if you’re paying more for your shampoo, it should be lasting about 3 times as long. Using too much shampoo dries out your hair and scalp, and can leave your hair looking flaky and heavy.
- Make sure that you’re using a shampoo that’s right for your hair. If you want smooth shampoo, use something like L’oreal smooth intense shampoo. If you have curly hair, go for something more like Tresemme Flawless Curls. Get shampoo for dry hair and damaged hair if you have a problem with that, for fine hair if you’re having trouble getting texture into your hair, etc.
- To make sure the shampoo does spread out, make sure to start working it into a lather in your hands before applying it to your hair. This will prevent you from concentrating it too much on one area and not being able to work it through the rest of the hair evenly.
- Don’t start on the top of your head or at your hairline. If you begin at your ears and work your way around, you can make sure that the most concentrated dose gets to the spots that most need to be cleaned. Your roots should get the most shampoo, while the ends just need the runoff from other areas. (Conditioner, by the way, is the reverse of this. Your scalp needs less of it because it produces its own oils, so unless your scalp is particularly dry, concentrate most of your conditioning efforts on the ends and scalp.)
- Make sure to rinse the shampoo out completely. Leaving it in can dry out your scalp and leave unsightly residue.
With just a few quick changes to your routine, you could be making your products last longer while making your hair look and feel more healthy.
